Tips for a Pet-Safe 4th of July

Happy Independence Day to all of our human and fuzzy fans! The 4th of July can be an exciting holiday for people and pets alike, but to ensure fun AND safe festivities, I’d thought I’d pass along some great safety tips, courtesy of The Humane Society of The United States.
Many dogs are freaked out by fireworks, so consider keeping them comfy at home when you venture out for a dazzling display. However, if your home is within the sound-boom range, consult your veterinarian for ways to help alleviate fear and anxiety. Some ideas include: leaving a television or radio on and running an air conditioner to muffle the patriotic cacophony.
Doggies love parties and barbeques, so if you’ll have your canine sidekick along for the fun, never leave them outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or tied. When frightened, even dogs who normally wouldn’t leave the yard may escape and get lost, or get tangled in their tie, risking serious injury. Shelters take in lots of lost pets in the days immediately following The 4th, so make sure your precious babies have current ID tags, just in case they make a break for it.
Now that we’ll all be safe, wrap your patriotic pup in some red, white and blue, and have a fan-barking-tastic 4th!!
