Sports-Themed Toys for Un-Sporty Pups
February 16, 2006 at 7:23 pm by DarlaKittGuys are into sports, right? Well, not my Murphy. He’s definitely not a sporty pup, so I wouldn’t feel quite right buying him any of the sports-themed dog toys that are widely available. You’ve seen them: the tennis balls, basketballs, footballs, baseballs, and soccer balls, in squeaky-plush form or as vinyl chew toys. But he likes to play, so what sporty toys are appropriate for an un-sporty dog? I immediately thought of “sports” that appeal to rather un-sporty guys: pool, bowling, and dice, which are otherwise known as “the sports you can play while drinking lots of beer.” Ah-ha! Perfect for my Murphy man.

I consulted Dr. Google, and quickly came upon Planet Dog .Com, a site that boasts quite a hearty selection of sports-themed dog toys. And what did I find for my “drinking sports” loving doggie? An authentic-looking Sport 8-ball made just for hardcore chewers. This heavy-duty chew-ball is made of their award-winning Orbee Tuff material, non-toxic and eco-friendly, and rated a virtually indestructible “5” on their Chew-o-meter. Planet Dog also offers their snazzy 8-ball in a plush version, which doesn’t rate as a tough chew toy, but is sure to delight the doggies with its squeaky middle.

For some high-rolling fun, check out their Orbee Tuff Dice. These toys are made as exact replicas of the professional dice used in Vegas casinos, complete with rounded edges and inlaid black dimples. Rated a “4” on the Chew-o-meter, they’re durable and exciting, perfect for playing a rousing game of craps with your pup.

Of course, even un-sporty guys like to watch certain sports on TV, and this is also the case with Murphy. In a previous post I wrote about how he loves watching Flyers hockey with his daddy, so I was tickled to find an Orbee Tuff Hockey Puck! I can see it now …kitchen hockey! Murphy can chase this chewy puck as his daddy shoots it around the linoleum with his hockey stick for hours of quality fun time.
Unfortunately, my Googling for a bowling ball dog toy turned up empty, so if any of you know of one, please let me know. I simply must find one to complete Murphy’s “sports you can drink beer while playing” dog toy collection.
