There is still a need to help our nation’s animal relief organizations, especially having been hit by Hurricane Rita. the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) are working together.
Not only are there lost, and worse, little (and big) animals because of Katrina, shelters, themselves were in danger during both storms,
Among the facilities destroyed are the Louisiana SPCA in New Orleans and the Humane Society of South Mississippi, located in Gulfport, MS. Before the hurricane struck, LA-SPCA shelter staff evacuated their animals to the Houston SPCA. The LA-SPCA provides care and basic medical services for approximately 11,000 homeless and unwanted animals each year.
Before the disaster, the Humane Society
of South Mississippi sheltered 15,000 animals per year and provided a full-service medical clinic. According to the society’s web site, its building took on four feet of water and all of its vehicles were destroyed by the hurricane. On September 2, a disaster animal response team helped the Mississippi shelter evacuate more than 130 animals.
In preparation for Hurricane Rita, animal shelters in Galveston and other parts of southeast Texas have been evacuated. Houston Humane Society has evacuated to Bastrop, TX and Calcasieu Parish Animal Services in Lake Charles has evacuated to Shreveport. Both the Houston SPCA and Harris County Animal Control will ride out the storm.

Of course, famed PETA is helping to rescue our furry friends, as well, and they have a very good checklist for you to help!
Even Petco is giving their efforts to the cause,
Proceeds from a company-wide Hurricane Disaster Relief Fundraiser held from August 30th through September 11th are providing much needed food, product and monetary donations to the affected animals and the people who love them. We have donated over $500,000 in food, crates and supplies so far, and requests for help continue to pour in to the Foundation.
Please consider donating even a small amount of money to the ASPCA, HSUS & the PETCO Foundation (you can add your donation to your shopping cart and buy your baby something!). And don’t forget individual state SPCAs; support the Louisiana SPCA.
Even after Hurricane season is over, and the hurt has seemingly lessened, these wonderful organizations constantly need your help,
[The LA-SPCA] shelter receives no funding from government and statutory sources. We do have a contract with the city of New Orleans to provide Animal Control, yet this service is subsidized through donations. We will not lower the quality of service we provide because we “can’t afford it.” Our first and foremost responsibility is to the animals.

At Lipped Media, we felt it important to get this “pet project” started, but remain profit-free while these precious animals remain in such need because of the disasters in the Gulf coast.
You can even score an advertising spot for 1 month by FWDing us the e-mail receipt of one of these donations! Write for more info.
